The ultra experience: Two Oceans Marathon

A few years ago, on Saturday, the 3rd of April, the 41st (!) Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon took place in Cape Town. It had rained the night before, so the weather was pretty good for running.

Since 1970 the race is held on the Easter weekend. Starting with 26 runners 40 years ago, this time 26.000 runners participated over all distances– the 56km ultra marathon or the 21km half marathon. We saw a lot of them passing Hout Bay after they'd already been making 39 kilometers of the ultra marathon. Most of them still looked fresh, and they had to run yet another 17 km! Some of them were joking and telling each other stories... unbelievable. But the race track is a very scenic route - it crosses the Cape Peninsula and follows the famous Chapman's Peak Drive, that dramatic coast road, which was blocked by rocks until only few years ago, and then reaches the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

By the way - "Old Mutual" is the name of the sponsor, an insurance company who owns the biggest bank in South Africa. They showed presence in the race as well as you can see on the picture above...

A lot of supporters were very active in Hout Bay. A band of young jazz musicians played non-stop, and what's not less faszinating - they didn't need a conductor! We saw and heard them once before in Hout Bay, at the Friends Folk Food Festival which took place in Hout Bay on February 27th - a nice little event.

Despite the drizzle that we often had that morning the atmosphere was great, and a lot of helpers stood at the racetrack and offered little bags with water to the runners. The street was covered with thousands of these blue bags...

But some of them took the time to pose in front of the photographer they probably regarded as a reporter from a newspaper...

Then something happened... A van who was parked next to the street began to roll down to the track. But two runners stopped it by their own hands as you can see... Ah, no - I'm kidding. They were just stretching their muscles when I took the picture... :-)

I don't know if this man finished the race, but maybe that was not the most important thing for him... The winner - a man from Lesotho - finished after three hours and six minutes! 56 km! Isn't it crazy?

Maybe I'll start jogging tomorrow...
