Looking after children in Khayelitsha: Glorias Educare Centre
When we stayed in Vicky's B&B in Khayelitsha for one night, we learned to know Gloria Mbali who lives just at the back of the B&B. She runs a small pre-school for children from the age of 0-6 years which is called the Masakheni-Fox Educare Center. A really good example for a self-driven project in a township.
We met Gloria by chance in the morning after our night in Vicky's B&B. We were just waiting for our young tour guides who wanted to show us the neighbourhood when we caught sight of a house in a wonderful blue color, just behind Vicky's house. We got closer and saw some children looking curiously through the window. A small woman came out of the house, introduced herself as Gloria and invited us into her house. She told us that she turned her house into a pre-school every day from Monday to Friday; in the morning she took out her furniture, and in the evening she put it back again. She opened her pre-school in 2004, and by the end of 2009 she employed 6 women and was looking after 70 children. This way she's giving the children's parents the opportunity to earn money themselves. So this is a wonderful example how the community helps itself, how the people meet each others needs and try to make the best of it! The parents are paying 50 Rand a month for each child. For this small amount a child gets education and 3 meals a day! Now you can calculate how low the income of Gloria and her employees will be, but anyhow they make a living out of it...! After we'd come back from our walk through Khayelitsha, we entered Glorias Educare Centre again because the children wanted to sing for us. Claudia took some pictures of the children, and as you can see they really wanted to see those photographs...
This is already some years ago, and we are curious how Gloria is doing now.
